Where We Get Our Grapes
Great wines can only come from great fruit. To grow this fruit we currently have two properties: Vista Ridge Vineyards and the estate vineyard here at The Grove. We also work with some of the leading nearby viticulturalists (fancy word for grape farmers) in Southern Virgina and North Carolina like Eno River Vineyards, Cedar Springs Vineyard and B&S Vineyards.

Vista Ridge Vineyards
Our first farm was initially planted in 1993. This 30 acre property overlooks Smith Mountain and is located near Altavista, Virginia. Three acres are currently planted, predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon and Norton, from which the award winning Roanoke River Red is made. The 37 degree latitude is comparable to Sonoma. This excellent vineyard site at an elevation of 775 feet offers lots of sun, constant breeze for drying out foliage, nights cooled by the lakes of the Roanoke (Staunton) River and less rain than surrounding areas.

Grove Vineyards
Our estate vineyard is located across the street from the winery. The 44 acre farm is located at an elevation of ~730 feet on a sloping, mineral rich river bottom on the banks of the Haw River. Eight acres are currently planted with varieties that thrive in the Piedmont region's warm weather like Merlot, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Traminette and Tempranillo. Grapes are planted in 609 foot rows, 8 feet apart using the Smart-Dyson trellis system.

Lenox Castle Vineyards
Just a few miles northeast of the winery, Larry and Mary Lynn Sommers grows the best Syrah in the state. Larry was one of the founders of the NC Winegrowers Association and has been growing award-winning grapes for years at their Lenox Castle Vineyards. Our Lenox Castle red is made from their Syrah and Cab Franc grapes. We also purchase the Lenox Castle Symphony for our dessert wines.
