The Grove General Nathanael Greene Merlot commemorative wine was released on February 25, 2008 a month before Greensboro Founder’s Day. For each bottle sold, Grove will donate $1 to Guilford County public schools. Grove Winery and Vineyards opened in 2004 and is Guilford County's first winery.
The bicentennial wine is a means to celebrate and support Greensboro's history, local agriculture, and the growing food and restaurant economy in our city. The new local wine industry spotlights the development of new, local, small business, the support of community, and the access to local culture that the past 200 years of progress has encouraged.
The wine is 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. All grapes were estate grown at the winery in Guilford County from the 2006 harvest. The digitally printed label was designed by Page graduate Pam Lynch. The winemaker for this wine was Grimsley graduate Max Lloyd. The wine was aged for 14 months in French Oak barrels. The General Nathanael Greene Merlot can be enjoyed now or as a collectors item, the wine should age nicely for up to 15 years.
This is a limited bottling. 1808 (the year Greensboro was founded) individually numbered Bicentennial Commemorative bottles were produced. The first bottle was presented to Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson. Bottles number three and four were presented to the Greensboro Historical Museum.
